Inkandescent Kids: How old were you when you knew you wanted to be an artist?
Liza Uddin: I’ve always drawn, since I was a child. Art has always been a part of my life. I worked briefly at an ad company and did freelance jobs for a bit. I wanted to return to fine art, so I joined the Del Ray Artisans in 2013 and am loving being part of the artist community here. And, I had three pieces featured in the City Hall of Alexandria in 2015.
InkandescentKids: What is the most important thing you’ve learned about writing/ art?
Liza Uddin: Through self-publishing I learned that I was in control and had to make sure that my team got everything right. I’ve always wanted to create a children’s book and had the idea of a bedtime story that rhymed. I wrote it in a coffee shop in 2013 and had put it aside. In 2021, I had illustrated two books for Jennifer Kenney. That same year I had met writer, Amanda Socci who wanted to feature me in her magazine, DMV Shorts. We became friends and she was the one who encouraged me to self-publish, so I finally bought an iPad and did it! I will be forever grateful to her for that.
Inkandescent Kids: How did it feel to see your work published?
Liza Uddin: My book was a project that I’ve long been wanting to complete, and I am happy that it has finally been published and in the hands of children around the world
Inkandescent Kids: What advice do you have for kids who want to become writers or artists?
Liza Uddin: Don’t ever let anyone say you can’t make art or write, because you can!
