Inkandescent Kids: What is the most important thing you’ve learned about writing?
She’Meka Wilson: The most important thing I’ve learned about writing is that stories have the power to teach without feeling like a lesson. Children connect with characters, emotions, and adventures far more than they connect with lectures. When a story makes them laugh, wonder, or ask questions, the lesson stays with them long after they’ve finished reading.
I’ve also learned that writing for children is about seeing the world through their eyes. Kids are naturally curious, and they deserve stories that respect their imagination while helping them understand important life skills. Every sentence should be simple enough for a child to enjoy but meaningful enough for a family to talk about together.
Most importantly, I’ve learned that one story can start conversations that last a lifetime. If a child closes one of my books excited to ask questions, dream bigger, or learn something new, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I hoped to do as an author.

She’Meka: OH NO! Jade’s Money Tree is a fun and engaging picture book that introduces children to one of life’s most important lessons: how money really works. When Jade hears the phrase “money doesn’t grow on trees,” her imagination takes over, sending her on a playful adventure filled with questions, surprises, and discoveries.
As Jade learns where money actually comes from, young readers are introduced to age-appropriate financial concepts such as earning, saving, spending wisely, and watching their money grow over time. The story uses colorful illustrations, rhyming text, and relatable family moments to make these ideas easy for children to understand and enjoy.
My goal was to create a book that families could read together while naturally starting conversations about financial responsibility. I believe it’s never too early for children to build healthy money habits, and learning through stories makes those lessons fun, memorable, and meaningful.
OH NO! Jade’s Money Tree helps children discover that while money may not grow on trees, good choices, hard work, and smart saving can help their dreams grow.
Inkandescent Kids: What do you hope readers will take away from your story?
I hope readers come away believing that they are never too young to learn about money. Financial literacy is a life skill, and the earlier children begin understanding concepts like earning, saving, and making thoughtful choices, the more confident they’ll become as they grow.
I also hope families use the story as a starting point for meaningful conversations. Some of the best learning happens after the last page is turned, when children begin asking questions and parents have an opportunity to share their own experiences.
Most of all, I hope children remember that money isn’t something magical that simply appears. It comes from hard work, wise decisions, and patience. Just like planting a seed and caring for it over time, good financial habits grow little by little.
If OH NO! Jade’s Money Tree inspires even one child to start saving for a goal, ask thoughtful questions about money, or feel excited to learn something new, then the story has done exactly what I hoped it would do.
